Learning how to build an email list is essential for your business
Today’s topic is Email marketing- how to build an email list and get subscribers. There are a lot of people that say email marketing is dead and you should just focus on social media. No…No…No. What happens when your preferred social network of choice decides to make another algorithm change and your followers can no longer see your posts. You don’t get to complain about it. It’s their platform and they can do whatever they want. If you were using social media as the only way to reach your audience then you are in a bind. Your email list is the only true way to “own” a way to reach your audience. If you want to earn a living with your business then an email list should be at the top of your to do’s. Email Marketing can drive traffic and sales better than any social media platform. After all, the reason people join your email list is that they want something that you are offering or because they can relate to you or they got to know you, like you and trust you. For these reasons alone your email list is an awesome way to connect with your audience.
The best businesses and bloggers are those who get to know their audience. You want to build a relationship with your audience and in return, you will gain a loyal following. It doesn’t matter whether you are just starting your business or are a year in, start your email list. The sooner you do it the better it will be for your business. There are so many bloggers and business owners that regret not building an email list sooner and tell everyone they know how to build an email list. There’s a good chance someone that finds your blog and likes it will forget which blog it was they were on. You want to make sure you stay on their radar by getting them to sign up for your email list. This is a big way of how to build your email list.
The first thing that you need to do is choose an email provider. There are a couple of email providers out there that offer some free services. They are very basic services and don’t offer support with it. I am going to suggest ConvertKit. Affiliate link–> ConvertKit I started with one of the free services and had nothing but problems. People were signing up for my list but never actually making it onto the list. They were stuck somewhere out there in internet land. Those are valuable subscribers that I lost…not to mention it makes you look super unprofessional. On top of that if someone is on your list for two different opt-ins…the free services count this person as TWO subscribers. That means you are going to be paying sooner than you need to and you will be paying for each one of those subscribers even though it’s one person!
ConvertKit is $29.00 a month up to 1000 subscribers. After that their pricing is tiered. ConvertKit is fantastic. They specifically created their services for bloggers and entrepreneurs. You can send an unlimited amount of emails per month, visual automations, customizable forms, the option to tag subscribers (this is huge!), and great reporting. By tagging subscribers it gives you the ability to have them on multiple lists and target them for your needs…and you are only paying for them as 1 person, not multiple people. The customer service at ConvertKit has been awesome every time I’ve needed them and they have 70 different companies that integrate with them. I will have an overview of ConvertKit on my tools page on my website if you want more info. Please remember when you are setting up your email service provider that it is a Federal Law that you must include a full address at the bottom of your emails. If you do not want to include your home address then you will need to go get a PO Box.
Now that you have chosen your email provider, let’s move on. You want to have at least 2-3 different spots on your website that someone can sign up for your email list. You also want to set up a welcome email or series of emails. That means that after someone signs up you have an email sent to them welcoming them. A series of emails could be spread out over a week. You can invite them to follow you on social media or join your group. You could also tell them more about you and offer them some of your resources.
Speaking of resources…any resource you offer for free can be an opt-in. An Opt-in means that someone is opting into your email list in exchange for your free resource. You can do this a number of different ways. You can have a “vault type” access where they receive numerous freebies or you can have an individual download for your subscriber. It can also be a series of emails with a training or videos in them that are useful to them. These are not the only ways you can use resources to build an email list. You can send workbooks that help them solve a problem or a template to something that your readers would want. Stop and think about different creative ways that you can add people to your email list.
Once you have mastered the technique of how to build an email list move on to maintaining it. You want to be consistent and show up in your subscriber’s inboxes regularly. Regularly can mean weekly, bi-weekly, monthly etc. Whatever you do just make sure it is consistent so your subscribers start anticipating your emails. Make sure that you provide lots of information and write the emails in a tone that will appeal to your reader. This is an opportunity to introduce yourself and tell them info about you. Fill your emails with valuable information.
Don’t sell sell sell. Consistently provide them free valuable information. Provide information via your email that you don’t provide anywhere else. They will start to appreciate your emails, open them and anticipate them. Then once you have an offer your subscribers will be more inclined to buy because they see all of the valuable information you give away for free. They will realize that your paid info is even better!
With everything that I have mentioned, you can clearly see that it is important for you to learn how to build an email list. An email list will be your lifeline for your business. These are the people more inclined to buy from you once they get to know you, realize you know what you are talking about and know that you will offer them value.
